Never let drainage get value-engineered out
A wall without drainage is a wall with a countdown on it. Hydrostatic pressure is what pushes walls over, and it works slowly enough that the failure lands years after the customer has forgotten declining the pipe.
Price it in, explain it once, and don’t offer a version without it.
Name the engineering threshold
Walls above roughly four feet — or any wall with a driveway or structure loading it — need a stamped design in most jurisdictions. Saying that on the estimate protects you, and it explains a cost the customer would otherwise read as padding.
Skipping the copy-paste
Software with your per-face-foot block rates, drainage lines, and geogrid pricing saved builds this estimate quickly and schedules the deposit and base draw off the same record.
Frequently asked questions
Why price by face square footage instead of linear foot?
Because a 20-foot wall three feet tall and a 20-foot wall six feet tall are completely different builds — the taller one needs deeper base, geogrid, more excavation behind it, and possibly engineering. Face square footage captures height; linear foot doesn't.
When does a wall need engineering?
Most jurisdictions require a stamped design above 4 feet of exposed height, and sooner if there's a surcharge load like a driveway or structure above it. Put engineering and permit on the estimate as their own lines — passed through at cost, with the requirement named.
Is drainage really necessary on every wall?
Yes, and it's what separates a wall that stands from one that bulges in four years. Drainage stone behind the blocks and a perforated pipe daylighted to an outlet are non-negotiable — price them, don't let a customer value-engineer them out.
